Evaluation of welds

Welds can be evaluated in several ways depending on which properties we want to verify. The basic one is visual inspection, which serves to reveal surface defects. Mechanical tests are also used, such as tensile and bend tests, which verify the strength and ductility of the joint. Hardness tests help to determine changes in properties in the area of the weld and the heat-affected zone. Using optical methods, such as macroscopic and microscopic analysis of a section, the internal structure of the weld can be observed and its dimensions accurately measured at the same time. Together, these methods provide a comprehensive picture of the quality of the welded joint.

This includes cutting out and, if necessary, mounting the sample, followed by grinding and polishing the surface. A sample prepared in this way is suitable for microscopic analysis of the weld structure, the heat-affected zone and the base material, or for hardness evaluation.

It is carried out using the Vickers or Brinell method on a carefully prepared sample surface. Hardness is measured in various areas – in the weld metal, the heat-affected zone and the base material – so that it is possible to assess the changes caused by the welding process. This method enables fast and accurate evaluation of the mechanical properties of the weld, identification of changes in the material and comparison of different welding technologies.

Optical inspection and dimensional inspection of welds​

Microscopic evaluation of a weld serves for a detailed assessment of the internal structure of the weld metal, the heat-affected zone and the base material. Observed, for example, are the size and shape of grains, uniformity of structure, the presence of phases or possible defects such as cracks or inclusions that are not visible to the naked eye.

This analysis may also include dimensional inspection of the weld, in which, for example, the height and width of the weld, the size of the penetration or the bevel angle are measured. This information helps to verify whether the weld was made according to requirements and whether it has the corresponding mechanical properties.

Mechanical tests of welds, specifically tensile and bend tests, serve to verify the strength and ductility of a welded joint. In the tensile test the sample is loaded in tension until rupture and the tensile strength, yield strength, elongation and location of fracture are evaluated. The bend test verifies the resistance of the weld to plastic deformation by bending the sample over a mandrel, while observing the formation of cracks or other defects. Both methods are essential for assessing weld quality in structural applications.
